The evaluation often begins with a clinical interview. The mental health professional will ask the individual about their personal history, presenting concerns, mental health history, family background, and any relevant contextual factors affecting their current functioning. This interview helps the professional gather essential information and build rapport with the individual.
1. Clinical Interview: The evaluation often begins with a clinical interview. The mental health professional will ask the individual about their personal history, presenting concerns, mental health history, family background, and any relevant contextual factors affecting their current functioning. This interview helps the professional gather essential information and build rapport with the individual.
2. Standardized Testing: Depending on the specific concerns, the mental health professional may administer standardized psychological tests. These tests can assess a wide range of areas, including:
- Cognitive abilities (IQ tests)
- Neuropsychological functioning (memory, attention, problem-solving)
- Personality traits (personality inventories)
- Emotional and behavioral functioning (symptom checklists for anxiety, depression, ADHD, etc.)
3. Behavioral Observations: The evaluator may observe the individual's behavior during the assessment process. This can provide additional context for understanding how the individual expresses emotions, handles stress, and interacts with others.
4. Collateral Information: When appropriate, the mental health professional may gather information from other sources, such as family members, teachers, or medical professionals. This additional perspective can enhance the understanding of the individual's functioning in different contexts.
5. Report and Recommendations: After the evaluation is complete, the mental health professional compiles the findings into a comprehensive report. This report typically includes a summary of the assessment process, assessment results, diagnostic impressions (based on DSM-5 criteria), and recommendations for treatment or interventions. Recommendations may include therapy, medication evaluation, educational accommodations, or other support services.
6. Feedback Session: Often, a feedback session is scheduled to discuss the results of the evaluation with the individual (and possibly their family). This session allows for clarifications, questions, and a deeper understanding of the implications of the assessment findings.
Purposes of Psychological Evaluations:
- Diagnosis: To identify mental health conditions or disorders based on standardized criteria.
- Treatment Planning: To inform treatment strategies and interventions tailored to the individual’s needs.
- Educational Needs: To evaluate learning disabilities, giftedness, or other educational concerns that may require specialized services or accommodations.
- Legal Matters: In some cases, psychological evaluations may be conducted for legal reasons, such as custody evaluations or competency assessments.

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by excessive and uncontrollable feelings of anxiety and fear. These disorders can impact a person's thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and physical health. Common types of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and specific phobias.
Symptoms of anxiety can vary widely from person to person but may include:
- Feeling restless or on edge
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability
- Muscle tension
- Racing thoughts
- Excessive worry
- Sleep disturbances
- Rapid heartbeat
- Sweating

These techniques can help individuals calm their minds and bodies, reduce stress, and alleviate physical symptoms of anxiety.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches: Mindfulness practices, such as mindfulness meditation and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), are effective in promoting present-moment awareness, acceptance, and emotional regulation. By cultivating mindfulness skills, individuals can increase their resilience to stress and anxiety.
5. Stress Management Strategies: Therapy for anxiety helps individuals develop stress management skills to cope with daily stressors and build resilience. This may include time management techniques, setting boundaries, self-care practices, and healthy lifestyle changes to support overall well-being and reduce anxiety levels.
6. Individualized Treatment Plans: Therapy tailored to anxiety is personalized to meet the unique needs and goals of each individual. A therapist works collaboratively with the client to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses specific anxiety symptoms, triggers, and challenges.

Our therapists employ techniques to reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, promote emotional regulation, and help individuals reframe their experiences.

5. EMDR and Other Trauma Therapies: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized form of trauma therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to help individuals process traumatic memories and reduce associated distress. Other trauma therapy modalities, such as Exposure Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Somatic Therapy, may also be utilized based on individual needs.
6. Building Coping Skills: Trauma therapy helps individuals develop adaptive coping strategies to manage anxiety, triggers, and stress related to trauma. These skills may include mindfulness practices, grounding techniques, relaxation exercises, and emotion regulation skills.

An emotional support animal (ESA) evaluation is an assessment conducted by a licensed mental health professional to determine whether an individual has a qualifying mental health condition and could benefit from the support of an emotional support animal. The evaluation process typically involves several components that aim to assess the individual's mental and emotional well-being, the impact of their condition on daily functioning, and how an emotional support animal might alleviate their symptoms.
1. Initial Consultation: The evaluation often begins with a consultation or interview between the individual and the mental health professional. During this session, the therapist will discuss the individual's mental health history, symptoms, and any relevant experiences that may contribute to their emotional distress.
2. Assessment of Mental Health Conditions: The mental health professional will assess whether the individual has a qualifying mental health condition, such as anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, or other emotional or psychological issues. This may involve standardized assessments, questionnaires, or diagnostic interviews aligned with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria.
3. Exploration of Symptoms and Impact: The evaluator will explore how the individual's symptoms affect their daily life, functioning, relationships, and ability to cope with stress. This includes understanding the specific challenges faced and how an emotional support animal could provide comfort, companionship, and emotional stability.
4. Recommendation for an ESA: If the evaluator determines that the individual would benefit from the support of an emotional support animal, they may provide a formal letter or recommendation stating the individual's need for an ESA. This letter typically includes the mental health professional's license information, contact details, and an explanation of how the animal can help alleviate the individual's symptoms.
5. Legal Considerations: The evaluation process takes into account legal parameters regarding emotional support animals. Although ESAs are not granted the same access rights as service animals under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), they may be allowed in housing situations where pets are typically restricted, as well as on certain airlines (subject to specific regulations).
6. Follow-Up: Depending on the individual’s needs, additional follow-up sessions or ongoing support may be recommended. The mental health professional may provide resources for training the emotional support animal or ways to maximize the benefits of the relationship between the individual and the animal.
